Well, VBS is done for another year. Thank goodness!
Once again, I helped teach the first and second graders, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The kids were great and well behaved, unlike our group on Wednesday nights.
There were three of us adults in the room, one is the Sunday School teacher of that age, and the other (Donna) is our team leader for Wed. nights, so she and I are very used to working together. Donna taught Monday and Wednesday and I taught Tuesday and Thursday. Shirley taught Friday since our scheduled picnic at the park was rained out.
This year's theme was Hawaii and it was a very fun theme! We decorated the room, and are leaving it decorated for the rest of the summer since it's the room we use on Wednesdays—a nice added bonus there since the room needed redecorating anyway!
On Thursday the day's activities was snorkeling and scuba diving things, which I was thrilled to see.
The kids were well enough behaved that I brought all my diving gear to class. But I didn't just bring it—I WORE it all!
I geared up, complete with full wet suit, fins, mask and snorkel, bc (the vest that holds your air tank on your back) and my air tank and regulator. I could barely walk! I made a grand entrance and the kids absolutely loved it. Needless to say, I had their complete and undivided attention!
To teach, I 'stripped down' to just my wet suit, which I'd unzipped some, and I wrapped the bright sarong Cheryl brought home for Esther around my waist so I was wearing more than just my black skin. By the time I was done teaching I was completely soaked and so was my wet suit! Talk about being HOT! WoW!
But that wasn't the end of the fun for that lesson. I was teaching 'the Bible is God's Word' and using the story of Jeremiah, Baruch and the king burning the scroll. I emphasized to the kids just how long it had taken me to get this story right, so I was going to be reading the story to them. I read a couple paragraphs and while I paused to explain something to the kids Donna came up, pulled a paper from my hands and made a great show of balling it up and throwing it away. You should've seen the kid's eyes! They were horrified.
I carried on about how long it had taken me to write that out, and then went back to reading the story.
A couple paragraphs later, Donna did it again.
That's when the first kids caught on to what she was doing, and why (we had some bright kids!) and they were bouncing on their towels, (yes, the kids sat on towels instead of chairs because, after all, that's what you do in Hawaii) they were dying to tell everyone, but we wouldn't let them.
The last time Donna tore up my paper was right after I had read the part where the king would cut a section out of the scroll as it was read and then throw it in the fire—and it was so cool to see understanding sink in to the kids that hadn't put it together yet. Donna carried on about not wanting to hear what God had written to her and the kids tried to change her mind, especially when I told them about the consequences of the king's stunt.
Their attention did not wander once during that lesson. It was great. But what was even greater was to see that they got the lesson that the Bible is God's Word directly to us.
That was the highlight of my week of VBS—but that stunt has left me absolutely exhausted.
It wasn't until just now, writing this out, that I put together the 'hot' factor on top of the busy factor. I think I kinda burned a lot of energy during that hour. BUT, I'd do it again in a heartbeat if it would get the lesson across. (hopefully I won't have to teach while wearing my wet suit again. LoL. Although I would if it would keep the kid's attention to teach an important lesson. I'd just tank up ahead of time and be prepared afterward, as if I were actually diving.)
The kids all had great fun in their classes, too. Between all of us Wysongs, we had one in each class (because I was teaching the class between Ivan's and Isaac's class.) Abby helped in the kitchen, working with the ladies she works with in the clothing room, and Alex helped in there the two days he was able to come with us. (Which means they both were well loved and well fed!!)
Then, last night, the youth group had a church lock-in and they had a blast. Since Esther is going into Jr. High, she got to go to the lock-in, too, so I've only briefly seen the three older kids this morning. They've staggered out at different times, but have gone back to bed. They have until 1 o'clock and then they're evicted for the day. Our big day will be watching movies. I don't think they'll be up for anything else!! LoL—I'm not up for anything else!!!
Since there's no pictures this time, I wrote a thousand words. Well, just 900, but I've got to go eat—again. I honestly feel like I'd spent a day scuba diving. Oh well. It was worth it!
